Front page is deeply regrettable - and I say that as someone who respects the team at SM.

None of us in Govt make these decisions lightly. My colleague John (a parent himself) is one of the kindest most thoughtful ppl I know. Our primary motivation is always public health. https://t.co/QygLFeW8km

To those telling me hate speech is just ppl getting upset by offensive words - I suspect you've not been on receiving end of it. A selection from my social media platforms over last 48hrs, from mocking the miscarriages we have suffered, Islamaphobic/racial abuse, physical threats pic.twitter.com/8j2JQWiTpy

I don't need or want sympathy. Unfortunately I am used to a flurry of abuse whenever the Hate Crime Bill gets media attention (as it should!) or there is a high profile terror attack. My point is, if you haven't experienced hate, don't diminish the experience of those who have. pic.twitter.com/wkUzvkKtx5

Let me reiterate, am in no way suggesting Hate Crime Bill shouldn't be under scrutiny, it absolutely should, I welcome it (hence why I'm making extra appearances at committee). Nor am I decrying media attention it gets, our press have a vital job in shining a light on legislation
